  Title : the impossible dream?

  QUESTION:

Hey Marty! First off I'd like to thank you for the great music you've been sharing with us all these years. A bit of background on my question: I live in a country wherein children are expected to live up to their parents' expectations and wherein the idea of breaking away from the family who raised you in order to be independent is considered taboo. Now my question is, what would you advice someone like me who is passionate about music and wants to pursue a career with my guitar as partner but is restrained by parents who expect me to continue to law school? I stopped playing guitar once I entered college, thinking that it's just a phase brought about by adolescence but now that I've graduated I realized that to be a musician is still my calling. I really need all the pieces of advice I could get as I want to achieve my dream, but how could I do that when my parents demand that I do differently? I feel so hopeless right now.

  MARTY'S ANSWER:

" I live in a country wherein children are expected to live up to their parents' expectation" This sounds like every country. Being "passionate about music" means never having to say that you are "passionate about music"...I have never used that phrase once in my life. If you are in fact willing to devote your life to making music (not pursuing a career in music---that is setup for failure), then make music ALL THE TIME, love making music, automatically choose music over everything else, sacrifice whatever is necessary to make your music. Then you will truly have the satisfaction of creating YOUR music. That I can guarantee you. You must create music for that reason alone, and maybe, maybe some others will enjoy it. That is a bonus, but the main satisfaction comes from creating the music yourself. Don`t be hopeless, just work like crazy and make some dreams happen for yourself. Best of luck.
