  Title : Harmonies and style

  QUESTION:

This is a two parter...

1. I was just listening the Dragon's Kiss again, and I can hear alot of harmony parts. Other than the songs with Jason Becker, did you play the harmony? Or did you use some sort of smart harmonizer? I tried to get that sound with a Boss Super Shifter 5 on the harmony setting, but it got really muddy when I started playing fast runs.

2. I've never heard anyone play guitar like you. I've been listening to your work for years and I'm still amazed every time I hear it. Is your style an in-born sort of thing, or are you thinking about what you want to sound like? Seems like everything I play sounds like a Mustaine rippoff, and I'm trying to incorperate your style with no success. I've heard about various videos you've put out. Are there any "Art of Marty Friedman" books out there? I've been messing with all sorts of exotic scales, but... If you have any words of wisdom it'd be great.

  MARTY'S ANSWER:

1. In the studio, all harmonies were done separately.

2. Maybe try `The Essential MF` for a video. I think we must all consciously think of what we want to sound like, what we want to represent ourselves. There is nothing wrong with being a so-and-so ripoff as long as that is what you like to hear coming out of your instrument.
