Title : The Need for Speed

  QUESTION:

Dear Marty, I was listening to BB King the other day and perceived he plays slowly all the time. In an interview of his - when he explained his style/technique - he says he isn't fast indeed. Then, I saw he was ranked top ten in three lists of best guitar players of all time - 03rd, 06th and 17th, if I remember it well. Also, David Gilmour - another slow player - is regarded as one of the best. Whenever I play the guitar, I always want to be fast, even though it is hard for me to do it. Most players - and listeners as well - simply love high speed solos. You are a very keen fast player and also play amazingly well in slow moments. With all that in mind, I wonder about the importance of high speed play, that is, if it is really needed. With a lot of appreciation, Bastian

  MARTY'S ANSWER:

Good Q. Rankings and lists mean zero. Slow/fast also means zero. What means something is how you feel when you hear someone`s music, how you want to have that sound in your life. The only thing that is "needed" is exactly the musical content that expresses "you". Best of luck.
